CEDAR: Promoting Eco-tourism in Bukidnon

Known as the “Highland Paradise in Mindanao”, Bukidnon’s lush greenery of trees, bushes and plants sprouting in the mountains invites visitors to its beauty and peace. CEDAR or Center for Ecological Development and Recreation is the main entity backed by the Local Government Unit of Bukidnon and DENR (Department of Environment and Natural Resources) to promote eco-tourism in the province.

Considered as the little Baguio in the Philippines, Bukidnon is now aggressive in building their tourism reputation through the development of its environment. CEDAR housed a man-made forest of tall, strong trees which can be seen along the main highway. It serves as shade to the park where families and friends can stay and breathe the fresh air.

CEDAR is located in Barangay Impalutao, Impasug-ong, Bukidnon. It has a total land area of about 1,703 hectares. 373 hectares is covered by the man-made and natural forest. The large area is contained by Mount Kibuwa. CEDAR has five waterfalls and the most notable is Dila Falls. It has an elevation of 600 to 1200 meters above sea level with Mount Kibuwa as the highest. One can see the panoramic view of the mountains of Bukidnon and the towering Mount Kitanglad at Mount Kibuwa. A 100-hectare rattan plantation exists in the area. Hundreds of thousands of white lawaan trees and giant bamboos also contained the forest.

The CEDAR was developed because of the reforestation efforts of the government of Bukidnon. Now known as “An Eco-tourism Site in the Heart of Bukidnon”, it was declared as a protected area and was managed by the government since 1912.

From the center of CEDAR, Gantungan Falls is a walking distance of about 720 meters, while Natigbasan is 780 meters and Dila Falls at approximately 960 meters. These falls are blessed with pleasantly cool waters and a breathtaking display of granite rock and boulders. Swimming is not ideal because of the strong current and depth of the water.

At CEDAR, one can enjoy the cool, used-to-be-crystal-clean waters of the 6-foot deep spring swimming pool. Maybe because of the lack of Government fund, the pool is not regularly maintained and kept clean. There is also a camping site, where friends and families alike stay overnight. Mostly chose to stay in the place for a weekend getaway because of the pollution-free air, peaceful and relaxing ambiance. Horseback riding in CEDAR is also available at a very low price. Be sure to book ahead or call the office so they can prepare the horses. One of the biggest Walking Sticks, a kind of insect, can be found inside this Ecological and Recreational Project.
